Abstract

Commercialization in contemporary church life has generated an ethical crisis that threatens the integrity of pastoral ministry. The paradigm of ministry, which originally focused on spiritual devotion, has now shifted toward a business-oriented management approach. This shift creates a dilemma for church leadership between faithfulness to pastoral calling and economic demands, reflected in paid ministry practices, spiritual marketing, and hedonistic lifestyles that contradict the principles of simplicity exemplified by Jesus Christ. This study aims to examine the ethical crisis in church leadership amid the widespread commercialization of ministry through a qualitative method. The findings reveal that the essence of church leadership lies in the calling to shepherd the congregation according to biblical values. However, in adapting to contemporary demands, churches often become entangled in commercialization. Amid increasingly complex economic pressures, theological spirituality becomes essential as a critique of commercialization theology that disregards the sacredness of ecclesiastical calling. Therefore, the church needs to return to a pure spirituality grounded in the theology of the cross as the foundation for restoring the integrity of pastoral ministry.

 

Abstrak

Komersialisasi dalam kehidupan gereja masa kini telah memunculkan krisis etika yang mengancam integritas pelayanan pastoral. Paradigma pelayanan yang semula berfokus pada pengabdian spiritual kini bergeser ke arah pengelolaan bercorak bisnis. Pergeseran ini menimbulkan dilema bagi kepemimpinan gereja antara kesetiaan pada panggilan pastoral dan tuntutan ekonomi, yang tercermin dalam praktik pelayanan berbayar, pemasaran spiritual, hingga gaya hidup hedonisme yang bertentangan dengan prinsip kesederhanaan Yesus Kristus. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji secara teologis krisis etika kepemimpinan gereja di tengah maraknya komersialisasi pelayanan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hakikat pemimpin gereja terletak pada panggilan menggembalakan umat berdasarkan nilai-nilai alkitabiah. Namun, dalam adaptasi kontekstual terhadap tuntutan zaman, gereja kerap terjebak dalam arus komersialisasi. Di tengah tekanan ekonomi yang kompleks, spiritualitas teologis menjadi penting sebagai kritik terhadap teologi komersialisasi yang mengabaikan kesakralan panggilan gerejawi. Oleh karena itu, gereja perlu kembali pada spiritualitas murni berbasis teologi salib sebagai dasar pemulihan integritas pelayanan pastoral.
